POL218Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sani Abacha, Electoral Fraud, Olusegun Obasanjo
Document Summary
In 1979, an election occurred and shagari was elected. In 1983, he won a re-election in a fraud election which was marred by violence. After this fraud re-election, a new coup was formed again. The leader was buhari (which became an elected president later on) and refuses to commit to relinquish power and failed to improve the economy. There was a new coup by a new leader and he moved the capital from a colonial town to the centre and more neutral territory in nigeria. The problem is, however, is its costly and inef cient because you need new transport and roads to get to this new capital. During this era, there was a rise in sharia law in the northern states. This was a reasonable response to rampant corruption within the judicial system because they know the judicial system was unjust. The leader promised he would transition everything to democratic rule but then changed his mind.
