Persian empire: zoroastrianism (~600 bce, polytheism, 549 bce: cyrus the great founds achaemenid persian empire, allows subject people to worship own gods, achaemenid dynasty ended by alexander the great. Sassanid empire 224 bce 627 ce: 2234 bce, ardashir founds new sassanid dynasty, war with byzantines weakens empire, ripe for muslim conquest. Arrival of islam: 632 ce, death of mohammed, rapid spread of islam over 20 years via arab conquest, later, invasions by seljuk turks (11th c), mongols (13th c) Iranian courtiers make themselves useful to foreign rulers. Iranian culture/language continue to dominate: arabic script, no forced conversion, but zoroastrianism declines, sunni- hi"a s(cid:272)his(cid:373, rift over rightful successors to mohammed, early iranian muslims are predominantly sunni.
