Margaret canovan"s populism comes up with a typology of populism which basically consist of two categories, namely agrarian populism and political populism. They are further subdivided into a total of seven different kinds of populism. Berlin et al. provides a definition consisting of 6 features, including the importance of the people (gemeinschaft) and the rejection of politics, ex the return to the natural condition of society before the introduction of any political system. These authors also suggest that modernization generates populism. A better approach made by me ny and surel stated populism"s 3 core characteristics, 1. the people" holds great importance. Here, a feeling of community is stressed, and horizontal cleavages are played down while vertical ones are played up for the purpose of excluding particular groups, e. g. elites and immigrants. People" has been betrayed by the elites through their abuse of power, corruption etc. 3. populists demand that the primacy of the people has to be restored.
