House of lords, from their fathers: uk house of lords so the house of lords was mostly composed of (male) hereditary peers. 28 hereditary peers didn"t have to worry about pleasing the masses, because they had an automatic right to sit in the house of lords regardless of what the public thought of them. The british parliamentary system but canada did not have a landed aristocracy and hereditary peers, as britain did. This means that the non-elected senate can block legislation passed by the elected house of commons, by refusing to pass the same legislation.
