ERS120H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Clastic Rock, Lithification
Document Summary
To make sedimentary rocks, we first need sediments. The sediments are going to be transported, compacted and weathering. Clastic rocks: loose rock fragments (clasts) cemented together. Erosion: removal of grains from parental rock. Transportation: rocks usually just sir there but to make the sedimentary rock, transportation has to occur by the dispersal of solid particles and ions by gravity, wind, water and ice. Deposition: settling out of the transporting fluid. Made up of bits of other types of rocks. Grains bigger than 2 mm are called gravel. The further the sediments are transported, the smaller they get because they"re bumping and crashing into other things. Grain size can be used as an indicator to figure out how far the sediment was transported. Grains are more rounded as it is transported a longer way. The shorter transport distance, the more angular the shape.
