Document Summary

Nerve nets: cnidarians; nervous system that is an interconnected nerve net; the axons make synaptic contacts at points where they intersect. Cnidarian neurons are: not specialized into different divisions, carry action potentials in both directions (not specifically sensory or motor) A reflex arc consist of at least two, and often many, neurons connected in series. Polysynaptic arc: include more than one pathway. The pathway contains at least one interneuron intervening between the sensory an motor neurons. Parallel processing: pattern of info processing in n. s. in which multiple pathways simultaneously carry information about a particular input or output; the info is resynthesized where pathways converge. Nowadays we rely on dna sequencing to determine phylogeny; in the nervous system, peptide neurotransmitters and the enzymes that synthesize small molecule neurotransmitters can provide the basis for molecular phylogeny. More complex nervous systems show centralization (i. e. central and peripheral nervous system) Also see groupings of interconnected neuronal cells into ganglia: clusters of neuronal somata.
