A lot of characteristics of the thick-billed murres sets them apart- most marine birds are actually not colorful (brown, black, white) Their legs are also an adaptation great swimmers- they are made more for under water environment. Population- same species, same location, same time- ie they can interbreed. Counting all individuals not possible because: what we can measure about population: migration patters, interactions, size, mortality/birth rate, allele frequency, you can use something like transect- where u don"t count every bird but sample from sub-area. Should have tagged people randomly instead of friends sitting together- so random selection. Tags should not influence behaviour of animals- no more or less likely to be recaptured than in first sample so the handling should not be traumatic. Give individuals some time to re-mingle but not so long that they breed (do not want influences from life-history events)- so pop size that we measured is constant.
