Document Summary

Bio202: lecture 5: energy, feeding and digestion: february 11, 2019. Plants use photosynthesis to capture sunlight (radiant energy) Consumers obtain energy differently: herbivores eat plants to obtain energy, carnivores east herbivores and other animals to obtain energy, humans are consumers. Cellular processes: some chemical reactions spontaneous and release of energy (chemical or thermal) Biological processes: transfer between different energy forms (in animals, most often chemical to kinetic energy: kinetic energy: energy of movement, potential energy: energy to be used up, trapped in a system. Energy that cannot be processed: feces or urine. Metabolic pathway: a series of chemical reactions yielding a final product. It includes spontaneous catabolic breakdown that requires no energy. Delta g = energy available in the reaction. Enzymes (mostly proteins) are catalysts for biochemical reactions. Lower activation energy needed for chemical reactions in cells. Enzymes speed up reactions that normally would take too long at normal temperatures.
