Document Summary

Concept 14. 1 mendel used the scientific approach. Mendel chose to track only characters that occurred in two distinct alternative forms. He also used true-breeding varieties (plants that produce offspring of the same variety when they self-pollinate) Hybrid offspring of p generation are called f1 generation. When f1 individuals self-pollinate or cross- pollinate with other f1. In a typical experiment, mendel mated two contrasting, true breeding varieties, a process called hybridization. True-breeding parents are p generation hybrids, f2 generation is produced. When mendel crossed contrasting, true-breeding white- and purple- flowered pea plants, all of the f1 hybrids were purple. When mendel crossed f1 hybrids, many f2 plants had purple flowers, but some had white. He discovered ratio of about 3 to 1, purple to white flowers, in f2 generation. Mendel reasoned that only the purple flower factor was affecting flower colour in f1 hybrids. Mendel called purple flower colour a dominant trait and white flower colour a recessive trait.
