He is best known for the dramaturgical approach to symbolic interactionism. He says that we always seek to impression manage in some way. We want to give off a particular version of ourselves which we hope is accepted by the other person. Depending on the situation, impression management will vary. There"s a part of us that"s managing things behind the scenes. Face work is based off of the looking glass self. It is maintaining relatively predicable perceptions of others and of ourselves. Losing face is when we perceive that other people perceive us in a less than positive light. To maintain face means a successful management of the situation. Consistency between the impression you give to people and the perception they have of you.
