Document Summary
Canada has people from all different ethnic backgrounds with different languages, religions, and values. Every year, we receive an average of 250,000 new comers, and in the next few years the number will go up to 300,000. As these people move to the country they increase its cultural diversity, and thus it is important for us to recognize their contributions and also the challenges they face when they move here. All canadian children will experience ethnic socialization, in other words, parents" values and cultural ideas are passed on to children. Most children crystalize speci c values of their own ethnic group by the time they are four years of age, thus they become aware that a racial/ethnic hierarchy exist in the society. They will learn that some groups are valued and others are not. Furthermore, there are differences and inequalities among ethnic groups, in terms of family structure, parenting roles and values etc.
