Continuity theory: people cope with daily life in late adulthood in essentially the same ways they coped in earlier life. Sense of continuity and connection between past and present. Doesn"t mean there"s no change, but changes build on and link to past experiences, skills, strengths, etc. Within overarching continuity of activities, there is innovation. Likes playing sports, but gets injured and now has to stop. Same thing over and over again, need to adjust to new circumstances and environments. Internal continuity: personal identity: continuity: feelings of competence, mastery, self-esteem. I"m still the same person even if i look different , etc: discontinuity: mental health problems. External continuity: remembered physical and social environments, relationships, activities, roles: continuity: being in familiar places with familiar people, discontinuity: change to new environments, loss of relationships, roles.
