Some stressful events are positive; these still exercise a pressure on the system or challenging stressors, that we appraise as threatening. Stress : the process by which we relate to the threat. Anxiety: a negative response to a stressor. A reaction observed by canadian scientist hans selye, after failing to discover a new sex hormone. 3 stages: alarm reaction (mobilization of the body"s resources) - adrenaline goes up, resistance (coping with stressors) - easy to do if it is short-lived, exhaustion (the depletion of reserves) - used up all the adrenaline, none left. Prolonged stress can damage your body (leading to neural circuit degeneration) Telomeres (pieces of dna at the end of chromosomes) appear to shorten because of stress this impedes their ability to divide and survive. A panic attack is the sudden availability of energy to face a danger without any real emergency.
