Perception: the selection, organization and interpretation of sensory information. We use our past experiences, knowledge, etc. in order to analyze and perceive the information. Top-down process; when we use knowledge, experience, assumption, expectations to process information. Selective attention: our ability to focus on one particular stimulus in our environment amid other stimulation. If we did not have the ability to selectively focus our attention, we would become over-stimulated. Our attentional resources are very limited; when we are using the cell phone while driving, our attention to driving is significantly reduced. Cocktail party effect: when you are in a party, even though you have multitude of conversation and loud noises, you are able to focus on one particular conversation. Change blindness: oblivious to changes in our environment. In early 1900"s, there was a school of psychology, the gestalt school psychology. The gestalt psychologists were focused on the perception.
