Chapter 6- sensation and perception: basis of sensation. Detection: must be able to detect physical energy in the world around us (ex: hear someone speaking, see something in front of you, etc. Transduction: the physical energy that has been detected must be translated into language the brain understands (neuro-messages). Transmission: information must be transmitted to the brain. * if any of these are missing you have no sensation. Sensory receptors: these cells are the ones who detect, transduce, and transmit. Bottom up process: start with the basics and build up. In order to survive and function well we must be able to detect energy and stimulation (ex: if cold, get a sweater). Not enough to detect energy/stimulation - webber"s law: signal detection theory: our ability to detect stimulation or change in stimulation does not affect how strong the stimulation is.
