The scientific study of mind and behaviour - how we think, feel, and behave. It is used in medical, justice, army, social media, technology, business/finance, politics, sports, and relationships. Psychology was born in 1879 and it is 136 years old (which is young for a science) Early greeks wrote about topics such a sleep, dreams, cognition, sensation, perception, etc. They observed nature vs. nurture (what makes us who we are). Plato believed that nature (genes) makes us who we are. Aristotle believed that nurture (experiences) shape us. Descartes proposed interactive dualism - mind and body completely separate, but they do interact to produce sensation, perception, emotions, etc. *the mind and body connection is huge in psychology! Wundt started studying consciousness and founded psychology. He had a goal to identify basics of consciousness. James #1 science of mental life, discovered functionalism. He studied consciousness with a goal to develop conscious thoughts and behaviours (ex: Watson #2 scientific study of observable behaviour.
