Document Summary
There is a biological need to sleep. The onset and offset of sleep is largely biological controlled by. In human adults, sleep is a circadian rhythm the detection of light-dark. Located immediately superior to the optic chiasm. Suprachiasmatic n is sensitive to light (before thalamus) Melatonin released by pineal gland ( under the control off. Consciousness as a state: sleep and wake states. Consciousness as a process: the process of becoming conscious, selective attention process. Sleep is not unique: nrem and rem suprachiasmatic n) Administration of melatonin (27 min: decrease motor activity, induce fatigue, lower body temperature. We normally sleep and awaken once every 24 hours. Humans would sleep about 1 hour later every day. In order to sleep, one cannot be conscious of the external environment. Processing of stimulus input to cortex must be inhibited. Physiology: eeg, brains response to stimuli (evoked potentials) (42 min) Beta (awake and alert) high frequency 15 hz+, low amplitude.
