Sparta (land locked), worried about athens allying with others and limiting the power of. Walled city, could only be attacked from the. Athens (maritime power, relied on trade), was open to the world, welcomed commerce, trade and other traditions. Created a way of life, they subordinated individual needs and the needs of the family to serve the state/city. Ruled by two kings, each from a different family (till death) Gerousia (assembly of 28 individuals over the age of 60, elected from privileged families. 5 ephors (magistrates) = controlling a civil population, dealt with foreign affairs, elected annually by citizens. Only allowed physically perfect children to survive, deformed were left in woods. Young men/boys were taken from home at 7 to train in military till age 20. Weren"t allowed to show any fear or coward-ness. Age 20-30 they lived in barracks, helped to train young recruits. They were allowed to marry but could only visit in stealth.
