War is normally thought of as state on state violent behavior between two countries. Weber"s deiniion of state monopoly of legiimate use of violence within a given territory. Civil war is diferent there is a collapse of state and sovereignty. The state has lost power over its ciizens. What is the diference between civil war and revoluion? (sequence: revoluion taking down a ruler, civil war compeiion between who is going to be the ruler. Very diicult to make sense of neighbor on neighbor violence (brother on brother). No violence between communiies, but within a community. City states not one solid state, but many greeces". Peloponnesian war: 431-403 bce, backstory: 480 bce: beaing back persians, athenians lead the war (almost single handed delian league, 479-432 bce rise of athens versus sparta, contrasts: land versus mariime, oligarchy versus democracy, military versus commercial orientaion. Rivalry for who would be the best, but also rivalry because of very diferent socieies and poliical orders.
