There are different tools to use to analyze questions (utilitarianism, deontology, etc: there are different ways you can approach the subject matter. Back then no one knew what was going on in the natural world. Son of a doctor (nicomachus) father to son (nicomachus: not an actual doctor, but probably had some basic knowledge of the human body. Professionally trained as a biologist: who was studying the living world (plants and animals, devised a sophisticated taxonomy of hundreds of species. Species = that group of organisms that can breed amongst themselves but not with others. Do not have fertile offspring with others still same definition we use today: distinction of the human animals. Reason tries to figure out the world. The rational animal is a complex combination of both abstract reason (rational) and concrete embodiment (animal). Has rational capacity (soul in theology) and the matter that makes up our body.
