Document Summary

Read: justice in the city for next week. Housing and property arrangements for the auxiliaries and guardians. In the last section, we learned that they are a very problematic class as they have all this physical strength and are spirited. They can easily enslave the citizens rather than protect them: socrates pauses to remind us the worries the dogs poses. He says it is necessary to guard in every way because he indicates that they are stronger. The line they are stronger is meant to be there. They are not allowed to have any private property other than what is necessary. (e. g. they are not allowed to have money, accumulate wealth, they have to live like soldiers, and eat together as well). Each of these criteria needs to be established by law. Other things like clothing is based on paying for taxation.
