Document Summary

Phonetics studies the sounds of speech: phones. There are lots of different consonants and vowels in the languages of the world. Each language uses a subset of these sounds: each language has its inventory of consonants and vowels. However certain sounds that we can produce are not used in speech. Articulatory phonetics the vocal apparatus and speech production. Acoustic phonetics the propagation of sound and the physical properties of sound. Auditory phonetics (psycho-acoustic) the way in which the human ear and brain react to sound: human perception. How we represent on paper the speech sounds we hear. English orthography is not very representative of the way we pronounce words. Respiration for speech uses between 20-80% of lung capacity, depending on the loudness. For speech, exhalation is controlled: tension on the diaphragm is released slowly. The length of the average sentence is roughly the length of the average breath. When speaking, we take fewer breaths per minute than during normal breathing.
