Auditory phonetics- study of the perception of speech sounds. One of the most basic aspects of phonetics is figuring out which sounds are possible in speech. There are numerous ways of studying pronunciation in spoken language. Phoneticians have begun to employ some very sophisticated instrumental techniques to study spoken language. Articulatory phonetics- want to know the way in which speech sounds are produced- what parts of the mouth are used and in what configurations. Phoneticians have used x-ray photography and cinematography among other techniques.
