Overeating is an issue due to: abundance of high kcal, inexpensive, tasty, advertised foods, convenience, we now have access to food 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Obesity cannot be solely explained by overeating. Physical inactivity is fostered in our society: sedentary behaviours, watching tv, computers, video games, convenience items: snow blowers, cars, , we need to promote physical activity. Physical activity recommendations: 60 min of moderate activity per day (dri, 150 min of moderate-to-vigorous activity per week (health canada, physical activity can be broken up in 10-minute increments to achieve the recommended minutes each week. Perceptions and prejudices: assumption that everyone can lose weight, requires willpower and hard work but inhibited by genetics (epigenetics), social consequences of obesity, discrimination. Laziness, lack of self-control: psychological problems, embarrassment, rejection, shame, or depression.
