HSS 2342 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Nicotinamide Riboside, Survival Analysis, Mitochondrion

Document Summary

Lots of nad, uses up energy, body responds to that (signal to the cell to activate sirtuins) Sirtuins can affect many organs in positive ways. Insilin sensitivity, fatty acid oxidation, less sensitive (insulin resistance, diabetes is not a problem) Oxidative stress (as we age, we get more of this) and affects sit ruin activity (activity decreases) Nad increases with exercise and eating less, increasing sirtuin activity. Nad decreases with aging (or high-fat diet), decreasing sirtuin activity. Boost certain vitamins (vitamin b3) to boost levels of nad in cells (can be done in mice) Muscle cells have lots of mitochondria (to make atp) Stem cells do not participate (depend on glycolysis for energy, do not need much atp) Help signal to the cell (positive things), alters how stem cells function = important. Nicotinamide riboside = add nad to the cell. Increases number of neuronal stem cells (more activity and more stem cells that divide and replace old cells), better brain function.
