Document Summary

The leary model is a transactional and multidimensional model, which stresses relationships and the interaction aspects of interpersonal communication. It emphasizes that communication between humans is a two-person process where both individuals in uence and are in uenced by each other. People adapt roles based on how they want to be perceived by other individuals. Every communication can be recognized as occurring along two dimensions: dominance-submission and hate- love . Both of these dimensions are capable of occurring during an interaction. When individuals interact, each message has a dominate-submissive quality and a hate- love quality. Responses are made to messages based on the perceived message from the individual. Two rules govern the function of these dimensions in human communication: dominant or submissive behaviour usually stimulates the opposite behaviour in others. Individuals who act dominantly usually stimulate the person they are interacting with to act submissively (and vice versa: hateful of loving behaviour usually stimulates the same behaviour in others.
