Nature of group communication: interaction of 3 or more independent ppl using verbal and nonverbal messages to generate meaning for the purpose of achieving a common goal. Common goal, workable group size (5-7 ppl is ideal size), interaction and interdependence. Advantages groups generally accomplish more and perform better than ppl working alone, learning beyond what you can give from other ppl, social element that is vital to satisfaction. Disadvantages group work requires time, energy, and resources; conflict from disagreements with other members that negatively affect the group. Types of groups primary, social, self-help, learning, service, civic, work, public. Working in virtual group (responsibilities: be prepared materials and technology (like prep for face-to-face, speak, listen, make suggestions, follow-up, types of virtual groups: email/text, phone/comp audio conferences, video/web conference with or w/o documents and graphics. Balancing individual and group goals - primary tension. Over polite and cautious, afraid to express yourself fully; when groups come together for the first time.
