The interaction of three or more interdependent people using verbal and nonverbal messages to generate meaning for the purpose of achieving a common goal. Interaction and interdepended: groups generally accomplish more and perform better than people working alone. Disadvantages: groups work requires time, energy, and resources, disagreements that lead to conflict. Types of groups: primary, social, self-help, service, civic, work, public. Working in virtual groups (responsibilities: be prepared: material and technology, speak, listen, make suggestions, follow-up, types of virtual groups: e-mail/test, telephone/computer audio conference, video/web conference with or without documents and graphics. Characteristics of primary tension: members rarely interrupt one another, long, awkward pauses often come between comments, members are soft-spoken and very polite, members avoid expressing strong opinions. Preference to be with others who share your values attridues, and even personal characteristics: competence. Refers to necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to contribute to the group work and to achieve the goal of successful completion: familiarity.
