After short talk, most only recall 50% of content (25% without training and most of it is distorted and/or inaccurate) Important for all sectors in society: business, education, law, politics, etc: active listeners: increase in bp, hr, and perspiration (understanding at the emotional level) The big five of listening competencies: being open and willing to listen, being able to read nonverbal cues, being able to understand verbal discourse, being able to respond in appropriate ways, being able to recall important details. Hearing: your ability to make clear, aural distinctions among the sounds and words in a language: 5% of canadians age 15+ report some degree of hearing loss. Understanding; your ability to accurately grasp the meaning of someone"s spoken and nonverbal messages.
