Document Summary
Social stratification: structural differences are going to either foster integration or they are going to encourage isolation of individuals. When a ranking occurs it means an unequal benefit that is contributed across time. Two types of attributes: ascribed (given to you, inherited like gender or skin colour), and achieved (things like your educational level, the type of job, social class) socio economic status. People have higher or lower status and fewer or more opportunities. Socioeconomic status/social class: person"s position in system of social stratification/hiearchy that differentially allocates major resources, services, opportunities; often defined on the basis of education and income. Social structure (social hierarchy): used to think about how ppl in society differ from one another (placement on the invisible social ladder) Social gradient (of health and illness): lower the socioeconomic position, the worse the heath. Social inequality/equity: uneven distribution of wealth and poverty, unequal/unfair opportunities for education, healthcare, leisure.
