Document Summary
Part two: from republican patriotism to the self-rule. The identity and culture of people is what matters and the ability of people to express themselves in their own community. Charles taylor is new in that he focuses on self-expression. Politics de ned based on universalism is wrong. We must think of the politics of particularism or the di erence. Equality of the di erence must be recognized formally, institutionally, and politically. If we acknowledge that all individual people must be able to enjoy their own freedom and autonomy, this enjoyment results in them each going di erent ways in life. It is this di erence that forms the community and society. The failure to recognize the equality of di erence suppresses others" identity and causes social exclusion. Language is a term that manifests one"s identity. Qu becers must be able to use their own language, not simply bilingualism, but self- realization.
