The systematic description and analysis of recorded information (written words, media images or sounds) Analyze these for specific categories of content. Understand people and culture through the things we produce. Cannot know the impact of the messages or intentions of creators of the message. Text is filtered through the creator of the text and through the researcher. Different recorders may come up with different results. Some individuals and societies are more likely to enter their experiences and beliefs into a record. History will be kind to me for i intend to write it : selective survival. Among things entered into the historical record, some have a better chance of surviving over time (what gets preserved in texts, libraries and archives is a matter of privilege) Just as important an any other type of research. Guard against the tendency to interpret what we see in terms of our own interests, biases and ideologies (intra- and inter-coder reliability)
