Purpose 2: to measure many variables, test multiple hypotheses, and infer temporal order from questions about past behaviour, experiences or characteristics. Opinions about something that happened in the past. Temporal order: making sure the dv was not influenced before the treatment. Purpose 3: to attempt to generalize about a population based on responses from a sample. Abacus data (ottawa): polling research based on the federal government. Harri/decima (canada): looks at viewership of tv shows, bought by nelson.
