Document Summary

Conflict: a disagreement between two or more parties who see/perceive themselves as having opposite goals or values. Margaret heffernan: conflict can enable people to do their best thinking (we are being challenged) Differences: beliefs, attitudes, values, or personality that differ from eachother (leads to conflict and influences how we perceive conflict) Perceived incompatible goals: looks like one person has to lose something for the other person to have their goal met (win-lose situation) Information or communication gaps (lacks of info or misunderstandings): things we don"t know, misinterpret or miscommunicate. Competing: forcing a resolution by pushing ones own needs or solution, one side ends up being unsatisfied (can lead to destruction if one side is always winning, can lead to resentment), eg. sports. Accommodating: giving in to what the other side wants eg. Losing through forfeit (can cause trouble later on because of resentment) Avoiding: not talking about/not resolving the issue (a lose-lose approach) *some conflicts are better to avoid eg.
