Interdependent= reliant on other people for safety, survival, and support. We rely on other people to meet our most basic needs. Also rely on other humans for comfort, companionship, laughter, knowledge, and creativity. Our capacity to connect with others depends on our ability to communicate with them. Verbal communication= communication that involves spoken, written, or signed language. Symbol= something that stands for or suggests something else. Triangle of meaning= a model that explains the relationship among words, things, and their meanings. Referent= the object or idea to which a symbol refers to. Thought= the mental image we associate with a symbol and its referent. Onomatopoeia= words that sound like what they describe. Given how differently each of us experience the world around us, any given symbol or referent can stimulate a variety of thoughts. Our personal experience with a symbol or referent influences our thoughts on the topic. Denotative meaning= the literal or dictionary meaning of a word.
