Note 8 creaion of the athenian empire february 8th. The creaion of the athenian empire was a result of a couple of things: events in sparta, and relaions with sparta. 478- spartan regent pausanias was sent by spartans to cross the agaean to take command of the naval branch of the hellenic alliance. Took a leet to cyprus which was under persian control and forced it to surrender. From there- sailed to byzanium and forced it to surrender as well. He put pressure on from the north and from the south. There was a hiccup- pausanias began to display great arrogance- acing like a tyrant. He started displaying some weird habits, like dressing as a persian. The ionians approached the athenians to express their concern. They ask athens to protect them should he get too crazy and they want athens to take charge of the leet. The athenians receive them well, treaies are welcomed, and they begin decisive acion.
