Greek leet gathered at aegina, received embassy from ionia asking for help against the. Decided to send 1/3 leet to the ionians but refuse to sail past the middle of the aegean islands. Persians also cauious: wouldn"t sail further than the naval base at athos. In preparaion, mardonius used the divide and conquer strategy. Kill 2 birds with one stone; get navy from the greeks, drive apart the hellenic alliance. Just accept xerxes as your king, give mardonius his navy and provide military support against the spartans. Spartans got worried that the athenians might accept. Spartans completed foriicaion of the wall across the isthmus. They coninue to insist they make a stand there. They were interested only in protecing the peloponnese. If the athenians rejected mardonius" ofer, he would probably atack aica again.
