The end & aftermath of the persian invasion. In the spring, the greeks and persians resumed their military operations. This time though, war would go beyond the borders of mainland greece. The greeks fleets met near salamis they had received an embassy from ionia asking for help revolting against the. Sparta cautiously supported the operation: agreed to send 1/3 of their fleet, refused to sail beyond the mid-aegean islands. With the spartans refusing to sail beyond the mid-islands and the persians refusing to sail past their naval base at samos, they entered a stalemate until august. Mardonius was preparing for a new campaign against the greeks. While doing this he resurrected an old strategy: divide and conquer: could obtain a navy from the greeks, could rip apart the hellenistic alliance. He sent a special ambassador, alexander 1st of macedon, to athens to offer the terms of athenian submission.
