Period of republic (res publica - the state) Rather than a king they have two annually elected consuls (1yr term) Each have the same amount of power therefore they can veto each other. Symbol of the office is a bundle of rods w/ axe in the middle. Essentially have the same powers as kings but only lasts one year and is divided betwixt the two. 13 september 507 bc - dedication of capitoline temple (on capitoline hill) Capitoline triad (1 god, 2 goddesses) - every roman city has a capitolium. @ this point in 507 this is the largest temple in all of the mediterranean. Shows that rome is big, powerful, and rich.
