BIO 3303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Basal Metabolic Rate, Respiratory Quotient, Respirometry

17 views6 pages

Document Summary

Metabolism = sum of all chemical reactions in a biological entity, muscles, digestion, everything. Metabolic rate = rate of conversion of energy to heat and external work, like sugar to atp + heat. Respirometry = ratio of o2 going in and co2 going out to determine heat production and fuel used. Can figure out from knowing the o2 in and co2 out. Salmon eat in the ocean, get fat, swim up the river to birth place, then lay eggs and die. Both the journey and the eggs are energetic processes. Endurance and efficiency at the beginning, and at the end the spawning is energy heavy. Need to dig into the ground and stuff, high energy is a short time. Conversion of sugar to work is really inefficient. Only 70% turned into atp, 30% into heat. Burning atp only 30% turned into work, 70% into heat. Outward work (not internal) like walking is pushing on the ground.
