Document Summary

Objectives: a circulatory system is essential for animals that wish to achieve large body size and/or high metabolic rates. Once in place, however, the circulatory system can be used for the rapid mass transport of a variety of molecules, including respiratory gases, nutrients, waste products, hormones, antibodies. In this section of the course, we will look at the roles of the circulatory system and how the circulatory system is designed. We will then look at the design and function of the various elements of the circulatory system (heart, vasculature). Finally, we will look at the operation of the system and how it regulates blood pressure and flow. The study of all aspects of the functioning of organisms, from the molecular level to behaviour. Comparative = broad diversity (vertebrates); environmental = evolution of animals (matched phenotypes to envt based on natural selection). Course is based on premise that living organisms and the envt they live in evolved together.
