Like that fish that holds larvae inside of the fish mouth, like a mouth cave. Males in stickle back protecting and cleaning a little area, will fan the eggs to give them more oxygen. Cost to male where he doesn"t do anything else other than help his little buddies. Generally the differences in costs determines who does what when and why. Refractory period (inter-spawn interval) --> reproduction is a costly endeavor, more for female. Takes longer for female to get ready for next reproductive event. For females, inter spawn interval is longer when females are parental. For males, inter spawn interval is longer when parental than not, but both are much lower. Costs of engaging in parental care is lower for males.
