Females have opportunities to interfere in reproduction of others. Types of helping relationships: potential to help one another, cooperative nature of certain species, altruism = helping each other, mutualism, both parties gain, can be within or between species, reciprocity. Ill scratch your back and then you then you scratch mine: payment and payback, temporary cost, but at some point it is expected that you"ll pay me back. Involves memory, stabilized relationship: facultative altruism, doesn"t have to happen but usually does, obligate altruism. Individuals help others experience permanent loss of direct fitness: gain is through completely indirect fitness gains. Mutualism: mating - involves two males - duet dance. If female decides she wants to mate, there will be an alpha male and beta male - alpha male gets female: beta male eventually becomes alpha male, help now and ensure their own reproductive success in the future.
