Document Summary

Lecture 2 - proximate and ultimate causes of bird songs. Most classes will look at proximate vs ultimate. Slight difference, like a dialect of the same language. Each population (yellow, red, blue) has three birds making sounds (long dash is note, many dashes is trill) Proximate mechanisms to help develop product a certain way. Dna test says that their genetics are the same. Hand reared without song --> noises but no song. Hand reared with conspecific songs out of speaker --> proper conspecific song development. Head reared with song of male of another species --> poorly developed song. Males reared with song of own species but moved early on (not whole developmental period) --> song fully developed. Some innate preference to better learn their own song. Developmental window 10-50 days to hear it (don"t need to sing yet) Sparrow can kind of mimic a little but can mix up the letters and some parts.
