The earliest recorded investigation of animal development was done by aristotle in. He had two main ideas to how this could happen. The organism is already pre-formed within the egg or internally. The idea that from an egg comes a multicellular, complicated and complex organism and within that egg before it hatched was simply a smaller version of that organism. This made a lot of sense in animals that laid eggs (oviparous) This was a popular theory among religious groups. Followed the idea that god made people in his image. From this you could either hold the belief that the pre-formed person was held either in the egg (ovist) or in the sperm (spermist). If you believed the later you believed in the idea of a homunculus (see slide for image) An organism will arise from a morpheus mass that through time gained shape. A theory that made sense for viviparous internal development.
