Document Summary

September 8, 2016: microbiology - the study of microorganisms. Derived from greek: mikros = small, and organismos = organism. Smaller than can be seen by the naked human eye. Can include unicellular (single cell) organisms or non differentiated organisms (a group of identical cells) Nb: non differentiated organisms are not multicellular organisms. Multicellular implies different cell types, but non differentiated organisms have all the cell types. Debate over whether or not viruses are organisms (majority of microbiologists don"t believe that they are) They t the rst criteria of being small, but there is a debate as to whether or not they"re alive. <0. 1mm is not a microorganism (can be seen by human eye) Fit rst criteria (small), but they"re not organisms by themselves - they"re part of an organism. *rotifers (bug): not microorganisms: small, living organism but they"re multicellular. Organelles: not an organism at all - not alive since they"re only part of a cell.
