Document Summary

Lecture 15 - attack of the immune system hiv. Hiv integrates into genome and waits until host cell is activated by any antigen and replicates in those activated cells. Lifespan of a t cell which is actively replicating hiv: 2. 2 days. Virus infects cd4 cells and cd4 cell number drops. Hiv actively replicating so sudden increase in hiv virus. Immune system hasn"t had time to learn, not attacking hiv or hiv infected cells. After 3 weeks, immune system makes response against hiv (acquired system activated) Humoral and cell mediated response will be activated and suddend rp in hiv virus. Reach a period we now call seroconversion> 0 negative state to 0 positive state. Seroconversion = antibodies to detect against antigen, not specific to hiv. Asymptomatic period = fight between hiv and immune response. Decrease in cd4 , slow increase in hiv. After several years, cd4 reaches certain level that now it is compromised.
