Extinction of a species does not mean the lineage of that species disappears. Taxa have gone extinct on evolutionary time scale have not died "without issue" End permian mass extinction (90-95%), family diversity drop. Likely the siberian and decan trap volcanic activity. May have emitted enough stuff to completely acidify the world. May have been two separate but closely spaced events. Something or many things go bad, serious environmental change. Evolutionary fate of species is extinction, all species will go extinct. Paleontological data show that once humans show up there, lots of species go extinct. Human colonization means lots of animals go extinct. Uncertain whether humans cause it or humans tend to show up while climates are changing. Humans hunting for lots of reasons like culture.
