Malthus: populations can grow exponentially, but resources can only change linearly. (not well supported: this idea is important though, it touches on how resources limits population growth. The advent of technology and how it modifies agricultural activity is what proves malthus wrong. There are no more agricultural frontiers left for sustainable. But the productivity of those agricultural areas are much higher.
