BIO 2129 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: 1918 Flu Pandemic, Demographic Transition, Conservation Biology
Document Summary
Also human demography reflects very little on actual ecologic populations. Assignment: fact check an ecology article in media, must be clear and important theme in article that relates to something that is alive in the natural world. No blogs, mostly journals. (conservation biology science, nature, ecology) 9 sources. Last 300 years, human population took a great leap forward. Resource consumption is an overwhelming part of our story. Number of humans: for our body size, our population is 1000x more abundant. Typically the bigger the animal, the lower the population density. Malthus: populations can grow exponentially, but resources can only change linearly. (not well supported: this idea is important though, it touches on how resources limits population growth. The advent of technology and how it modifies agricultural activity is what proves malthus wrong. There are no more agricultural frontiers left for sustainable. But the productivity of those agricultural areas are much higher.
