Deductive reasoning is used to identify what should be observed if the hypothesis is correct. Common form of deductive reasoning error is known as affirming the consequent. (hypothesis goes in one direction) if h1 is true then p1 must also be true. So if the prediction is true, the hypothesis is true. Science is distinguished from other approaches to gaining knowledge, it is testable. Dr. john snow made a map which correlated cholera with well distributions. He realized that particular wells caused the disease. He petitioned to get the handle of the well taken off, thus stopping the disease. Obviously there"s no molecular mechanism, but just a correlation which captures the cause. Kiss, but everything should be made simple as possible but not simpler. Don"t make complicated hypothesis when a simple one is earier. Harvestible biomass: changes in biomass can affect the biogeochemical process. Production of new organic matter or biomass by autotrophs.
